Who is Sarah Pun?

Picture
I am an energetic and optimistic teacher.  I strive to inspire my students to become the best they can be, step outside their comfort zones, gain confidence (as well as English proficiency!), expand their knowledge and minds, negotiate and communicate with others, and enjoy themselves while learning.  I like staying up-to-date with modern technology and incorporating it into the classroom.
Other than teaching and meeting people from other countries, I'm also passionate about traveling to new places and having new experiences, as well as learning languages and cultures (proof is my husband, a native Chinese speaker from Hong Kong!).

In my free time I enjoy reading and learning new things everyday.  I'm constantly trying to better myself as a person and a teacher.  I love expressing myself artistically through cooking and photography (see the banners in this portfolio).  I live a very healthy lifestyle and stay active by going on long walks and practicing yoga.

My Educational Background

UNI Graduation 2008
I was born and raised in the state of Iowa.  I grew up in a small town and had little experience meeting people from other countries or with different cultures than my own until I went to college.  I was always interested in English literature and grammar, so I decided to major in English Literature.

I attended Marshalltown Community College for my Associate of Arts Degree where I had my first experience tutoring an International student and befriended many students in our foreign exchange program.  It was here that I discovered my passion for other languages and cultures and began my pursuit of linguistics and teaching ESL.

I transferred to the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) in Cedar Falls, IA for my Bachelor of Arts Degree and became an English Literature & TESOL dual-major.  I gained many ESL tutoring experiences during my time at UNI and learned that I wanted to work with adults.  Because I want to teach adult learners, I decided to get my Master of Arts (MA) Degree too.

I chose the Pennsylvania State University (PSU) where I am majoring in TESL in the Applied Linguistics department.  I have gained several more ESL tutoring experiences plus a year of teaching ESL as a Teaching Assistant.  I am now nearing the end of my MA degree at PSU and am excited to finally begin my career as an ESL teacher!
